Hermanus is the BEST place in the world for land based Whale Watching. Walk the cliff path with these aquatic mammoths just a few metres away. Just 2 hours out of Cape Town and you can hear the 'whale song' of Southern Right Whales mating and calving.
The focal point or “heart” of the Cape Whale Coast is the popular seaside resort of Hermanus, just a mere 2 hour drive south of Cape Town. It’s considered by many to be the “Best Land Based Whale Watching Spot In The World” where you can watch the Southern Right Whales basking in the waters of Hermanus! It is the only place in the world with a Whale Crier!! He blows a kelp horn to inform the town where the whales are on any given day.
Hermanus, particularly Walker Bay, is the mating and breeding grounds of the Southern Right Whale during the winter and spring months (from June to November). Southern Right Whales migrate from the Antarctic around June to calve and mate. Calving takes place in August and September and the males arrive for mating in October when the whale population peaks.
This beautiful town has a 12 km Cliff Path of the best whale watching view points in the world, stretching from one end of Hermanus to the other. At certain points whales can be seen playing as close as five meters from shore. The most popular locations in Hermanus for whale watching are Gehring Point, View Point and Kelders Point which are close to where the whales frolic. But the Whale Crier will point the way.
You will have the option to take a boat trip to see the whales at sea. [own expense] This is also an awesome experience. You can take lunch at a variety of restaurants in Hermanus.[at own expense]
You visit the endangered African penguins at Stoney Point and if time permits you stop at the Harold Porter Botanical gardens before returning to Cape Town via scenic Clarence drive. Clarence Drive is a magnificent scenic coastal drive, that rivals Chapman's Peak for intoxicating views over the ocean. It stretches between the windswept hamlet of Rooi-Els and the naval town of Gordons Bay, which nestles in the north-eastern crook of False Bay in the shadow of the Hottentots Hollands mountains. This beautiful, coastal drive stretches between the two towns over 21 km, hugging the wild turquoise Cape coastline all the way.
