Created in the late 18th century by the French horticulturist and explorer, Pierre Poivre, the Pamplemousses Botanical Gardens feature an impressive collection of plants from around the world. The Giant Waterlilis are one of the wonders of the Botanical Gardens. giant ebony trees, an impressive variety of 85 palm trees from Central America, Asia, Africa and the Indian Ocean Islands, sugar canes and an enviable collection of spice trees. Many trees have been planted by world leaders and royalty, including Princess Margaret, Coutess Snowdon, Indira Gandhi and Francois Mitterrand.

The Citadel Fort was constructed in a Moorish style in the 19th century by the British Army.  The fort has been converted into a National monument with wonderful views over Port Louis.  Surrounding the fort are also the Caudan Water Front and the vast Indian Ocean.

A former sugar mill turned museum, L’Aventure du Sucre in Beau Plan is a treasure trove for visitors with an abundance of things to see and experience.

The Port Louis Market is a colourful wonderland of exotic smells, a riot of colours and interesting souvenirs.  Mauritius boasts a rich cultural heritage with African, Indian, Chinese, European and many other influences making this a real treat to visit.

Bordering the Port Louis harbour, Le Caudan Waterfront is the trendy waterfront precinct in the capital and one of the best-known places in Mauritius for shopping and entertainment.  You will have ample opportunity to enjoy lunch [for own account] as well as leisurely sightseeing and shopping.  This is your chance to taste local food such as “gato Piment, Dhall Puri, Chanapuri”.

A popular buy in Mauritius is labeled fashion clothing made for the European market, exquisitely crafted model boats, straw baskets and exotic teas.  Mauritius is well known for the excellent rum that it produces and this makes an interesting souvenir for rum drinkers. Don't forget the quaint, endemic, now extinct Dodo Bird, was once a resident and you will find many replicas of this flightless bird.
