Journey up the incredible Sani Pass to the Mountain Kingdom of Lesotho and catch your breath at the Highest Pub in Africa. Discover something of the beauty of this scenic country of the Basotho as you make your way to the remote Mokhotlong town.
Depart from our office at 08h00 (or collection on route, if applicable) in a four wheel drive vehicle and we head up the Sani Pass, stopping at breath-taking view sites and the two border posts. Leaving the picturesque town of Underberg, you drive along hilly, green landscape to the foot of the mighty Drakensberg Mountains. From here you drive for 2h30 hours, up the Sani Pass which starts at 1544m and rises 1332 vertical meters to summit at 2876m. The zig-zagging gravel mountain pass with steep slopes, was constructed around 1950, and it never fails to thrill. The road is a steep gravel road with gradients up to 1:3, which can be difficult to drive in bad weather and may be covered with snow and ice in winter. By South African law only 4x4 vehicles are allowed on the road. As you curve through hairpin bends up to the summit you will have extraordinary views down into the valleys. You are in for a fun and heart-racing trip!
Once we reach the summit we stop for tea at Sani Top Chalet (the highest pub in Africa), we then head up Black Mountain for a short walk to view Thabana Ntlenyana (the highest peak in Southern Africa). We then head down through the beautiful Sehonghong Valley into the remote trading town called Mokhotlong. Mokhotlong town is 60km into Lesotho from the Sani Pass, and was once known as the most remote outpost under the British Empire rule. A bustling town with a local market which guests are welcome to wander through, in the centre of town. Enjoy your lunch [for own account], view the rare Spiral Aloe (The National plant of Lesotho), have a look at the old buildings and get to see how the Basotho folk trade. We then head back to Sani Top for afternoon tea and a toilet stop before we head back down the Sani Pass to arrive in Underberg around 18h00.
