Description
Leaving Durban you travel inland, through rolling green hills dotted with umbrella thorn trees, through the Natal Midlands and towards the giant peaks of the Drakensberg Mountains. The scenery and photographic opportunities on your journey are ever changing as the moods of the mountains unfold.
After about three hours you arrive at Giants Castle Camp in the Central Drakensberg Mountains. A quick pit stop to refresh and then you set off on a gentle 45- minute walk to Main Cave. Main Cave is a large sandstone cave containing prehistoric San rock art. This is one of the biggest and best preserved painted sites in southern Africa. Genetic evidence suggests that the Khoisan or Bushmen are amongst the oldest people in the world. The earliest of these paintings are about 3000 years old, and the golden age of the painters was between 400 and 200 years ago. A guide will take you through this unique exhibition.
The Khoi San people used to live nomadic lives in is area, before they were hunted to extinction, leaving only these paintings to tell their story. A custodian will inform us of the meanings of the art, and enlighten us on some of their beliefs, and traditions.
On returning to camp, a light lunch is included before return to Durban. There is a small amount of time for shopping along the midlands meander en-route back to Durban.
You will return to Durban at approximate 18h00.
