Description

This Safari takes in the best that the Okavanga Delta and its surrounding areas have to offer. You experience, the vast grass plains of Africa, home to every variety of herbivore and predator, and also being poled down the multitude of waterways which is the heart of the delta.

Your time in the wilderness starts at Kasane International Airport which is on the northern boarder of Botswana.  Your guide will meet you and take you to your overnight accommodation in Kasane.

After breakfast your guide will drive you into Chobe National Park where you spend 2 days.  Chobe offers game drives and river cruises in an unspoilt environment that supports massive herds of not only elephant but also a multitude of buffalo that is unrivalled elsewhere in Africa. It is an adventure filled with possibility all the way. Camping in Chobe is an authentic wilderness experience. It is the most biologically diverse area of the Okavanga.  It is Botswana's third largest park, and has one of the greatest concentrations of game in all of Africa.  The park is widely known for its large elephant population, estimated to be around 120,000.

Elephants living here are Kalahari elephants, the largest in size of all known elephant populations.  In the dry season, these gentle giants sojourn in Chobe River and the Linyanti River areas. In the rainy season, they make a 200-kilometre migration to the south-eastern stretch of the park.

Chobe is also one of the best places in Africa to witness the most dramatic predator action – its in the floodable grasslands of the Savuti region where lions regularly clash with hyenas and powerful prides famously take down Africa’s biggest game like buffalo, giraffe and even elephants.  This area attracts numerous bird species plus migrating zebra. Two wonderful days are spent here.

Then onto Moremi Khwai where you stay for 2 days. It is an area where evergreen trees line wide floodplains. It boasts excellent density and diversity of both predator and prey species with leopard sightings consistently good. From an ontological perspective, Saddle-billed storks, wattled cranes and many species of kingfishers and bee-eaters are common. In the heart of Moremi there are mopane forests and a patchwork of deep waterways and shallow flooded areas, creating a beautiful area packed with game. Leopard and cheetah are regularly seen and the density of antelope is notable. The area’s birdlife is exceptional.

Day 7 and 8 are spent in the Moremi Game Reserve.  The Moremi Game Reserve consists of pans, floodplains, lagoons, grasslands, forests of acacia trees, savannahs and dense Mopane Woodlands. This unique ecosystem, characteristic of the Okavango Delta, allows for a diverse spectrum of wild life and coupled with huge herds of impala and tsessebe and in the dry season large herds of buffalo, wildebeest, elephant and zebra come into the reserve from the dry Kalahari Desert in search of both food and water. The sitatunga and lechwe live in the papyrus banks of the waterways with lions, cheetahs and packs of wild dogs hunting in the open grassland. The Moremi Game Reserve is home to over 400 of the Okavango’s species of birds, including the African Fish Eagle, Crested Crane and Sacred Ibis.

On day 9 you head for the Boro River where you board a mokoro [dug out canoo] and get poled you down a maze of channels that stretch into the Okavanga Delta.  Your two days here include gliding through waterways past hippo and crocodiles with flashing colours of kingfishers diving for fish and the iconic cry of the Fish Eagle:  and walks through the grasslands with your guide to discover wildlife on foot.

On Day 11 after breakfast you will be taken to Maun where your safari ends.  You will take away many cherished memories and stories of the wild African bush!!
